Applying to California Universities

Here’s how you need to organize your time:

1. Check out the application.

Click here: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/apply-online/index.html

2. Get your score report sent.

If you took the October SAT or are taking the November exam, be sure to request the score reports are sent directly to the UC schools. Find out how here: http://sat.collegeboard.org/scores/send-sat-scores

3. Take IELTS.

Take the TOEFL or IELTS if you haven’t. Even though the test is administered every Saturday, it’s often difficult to find a spot in Dubai. Check both tests and take whichever is sooner: TOEFL (http://www.ets.org/toefl) or IELTS (http://www.ielts.org/).

4. Get your supplemental materials.

Immediately ask your guidance counselor or school office for an academic transcript of your grades. It doesn’t need to be official. You’ll need to enter all the information online.

5. Start the application.

Try to complete the entire application at one time. Then come back to it when you complete your essays to review and revise.

6. Complete the personal statement.

Save most of your time for this, so you can write great introspective essays. Here are the instructions and prompts.

Personal Statement

All applicants must respond to two essay prompts — the general prompt and either the freshman or transfer prompt, depending on your status.

Responses to your two prompts must be a maximum of 1,000 words total.

Allocate the word count as you wish. If you choose to respond to one prompt at greater length, we suggest your shorter answer be no less than 250 words.

Freshman applicant prompt

Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community, or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

Prompt for all applicants

Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution, or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
