Should You Take the INSEAD Assessment or Executive Assessment (EA)?

When we have students applying to the Executive MBA program at INSEAD Abu Dhabi, we are often asked: “Should I take the INSEAD Assessment or Executive Assessment (EA)?”

We’ll make an argument for why you should prepare for and take the EA, but first, we will explain both tests.

INSEAD EMBA Assessment

Prior to 2016, if you wanted to apply to an Executive MBA program, you had to take the GMAT. Preparing for the GMAT is a long and grueling process for most people. Unfortunately, preparation was especially difficult for executives who had been out of undergraduate for 10 or more years. We know because we were teaching them!

Several MBA programs, such as IE and INSEAD, introduced their own tests so that executives would not have to take the GMAT. In their earliest forms, these tests were stripped-down versions of the GMAT. Over time, they have evolved into their own test styles.

The INSEAD EMBA Assessment includes the following sections:

  • Data analysis = 15 questions, 30 minutes, multiple-choice, calculate an answer
  • Data interpretation = 15 questions, 30 minutes, multiple-choice, interpret the graphs and complete data sufficiency questions
  • Communication analysis = 15 questions, 30 minutes, multiple-choice, read the passage and answer questions
  • Critical thinking = 15 questions, 30 minutes, multiple-choice, logic-based reading passages with questions
  • Case presentation = 30 minutes to read a business case and prepare a presentation, 10 minutes to present to a panel, 10 minutes Q&A
  • Personal interview = 20 minutes

Executive Assessment

In 2016, the makers of the GMAT realized that the GMAT was not a good fit for Executive MBA programs, so they released the Executive Assessment. While the EA started as a mini-GMAT, the GMAT has evolved away from the EA. Now, we definitely consider them two separate tests.

Fortunately, if you take the EA, you will not have to prepare for the case presentation and personal interview at the same time. Plus, it’s a shorter test. The EA includes the following sections:

  • Integrated reasoning = 14 questions, 30 minutes, multiple-choice, interpret graphs and answer questions
  • Verbal reasoning = 14 questions, 30 minutes, multiple-choice, answer reading, logic, and grammar-based questions
  • Quantitative reasoning = 14 questions, 30 minutes, multiple-choice, answer problem-solving and data sufficiency questions

Want to know more about the EA? Read this detailed overview.

Should You Take the INSEAD Assessment or Executive Assessment (EA)?

insead emba test or executive assessment

The EA definitely! There are so many reasons why you should choose the Executive Assessment over the INSEAD EMBA Assessment. Here are just a few:

1. You do not have to submit your application to INSEAD before you take the EA.

You can take the EA just about whenever you want. In fact, you can choose to take the test and then apply to programs. Some students choose this pathway if they have yet to notify their jobs that they are applying for an EMBA. They decide to get the EA, transcripts, and basic application out of the way BEFORE asking for recommendations.

If you decide to take the INSEAD EMBA Assessment, you have to submit your application at least two weeks before the test. You eliminate your flexibility to follow the process as you wish.

2. You can use the EA to apply to another EMBA program.

It is not unheard of for students to be rejected by INSEAD Abu Dhabi only to later be accepted by LBS Dubai. Each program is looking for something different or, perhaps, LBS Dubai was just the right opportunity for the student. No matter what the reason for applying to another program, you can take the same EA score and apply.

If you take the INSEAD EMBA Assessment, you will have to take the EA anyway because the INSEAD Assessment is only accepted by INSEAD.

Bonus?

Your EA score is good for 5 years, so you can change your mind now and apply using the same score later.

3. You can take the EA 2 to 4 times.

You are allowed to take the EA in a test center two times. Since the EA online that you take at home is built on a separate system, you can also take the EA online up to 2 times. That’s 4 possible opportunities to achieve the score you need. Of course, you won’t need all 4 chances if you prepare with us.

You can only take the INSEAD Assessment once. That’s right, you only get one shot!

4. You can take the EA just about whenever you want.

What’s better than a lot of chances to take a test?

Being able to take it whenever you want!

To take the EA, you schedule a date for the test at a test center or online to take at home. Either way, there are dates offered 6 to 7 days a week year-round.

However…

If you take the INSEAD Assessment, you will have to wait for an available assessment date.

5. There is no oral component on the EA.

The EA has 3 fairly straightforward sections and takes only 1.5 hours.

The INSEAD Assessment has a 2 hour written component and a 1 and 10-minute oral component. Here’s what’s in the oral component according to INSEAD:

Oral component: (30 min. preparation, 40 min. presentation/interview)  – prepare, deliver and discuss a business case study presentation, followed by a motivational interview

We don’t know about you, but we would rather just do a computer test and get it over with.

6. There are more preparation materials for the EA.

Since the EA is taken by students around the world, there are more and higher quality preparation materials available for the EA. INSEAD does release some guidance, but it’s not very thorough or super helpful. In addition, you need to prepare for the online format, not just do pencil and paper problems.

Studying for the GMAT won’t’ really help you because the INSEAD Assessment is more like the EA than the GMAT. There is a high-quality online platform released by the makers of the EA that will allow you to practice and take full-length tests. These practice materials are more in line with the INSEAD test than the GMAT.

Your best bet?

Study for and take the EA because…

7. You can always take both if you take the EA first.

We have taught many students who prepared for the EA, then decided to take both exams because an INSEAD Assessment date was coming up. Typically, they are at the end of their preparation and just doing practice tests for the EA. The INSEAD date rolls around, so they decide to sit that exam.

INSEAD doesn’t release the results of the exam for a couple of weeks, so they continue to take the EA as planned. They get the results immediately and provide them to INSEAD.

While it seems like overkill to take both tests, it was only possible because the students prepared for and planned to take the EA. You can’t really do the process in the reverse order.

Zoom SAT Prep Classes in Dubai and the UAE

0

We love Zoom SAT prep classes in Dubai! One of the best results of the last couple of years is that students (not just tutors) now love taking Zoom SAT prep classes. Here are the top 5 benefits of our Zoom SAT prep classes according to our students:

1. More Flexibility than In-Person Classes

If you have a schedule conflict, it’s easy to tell your tutor on short notice. It’s also easier to reschedule the lesson. Even better? You can hang out at a friend’s house, open up your laptop, do your lesson, and go back to having fun.

2. Easier Notetaking than In-Person

Almost all of our students take some notes on the lesson. No amount of technology will erase your brain’s efficiency at remembering when you write things down…

BUT…

What if you could take notes AND screenshot complicated workouts or problems? Zoom SAT prep classes make that possible.

In our lessons, we use a graphic tablet and pen to actually write on the screen. Students can see EVERYTHING that we are doing as we talk through the lesson together. Here’s an example:

zoom sat classes in dubai

3. Our Zoom SAT Prep Classes are 100% Live

No pre-recorded classes here! You’re there, your tutor is there, and we are talking in real-time. In a typical tutoring session, you chat with your tutor at the beginning. We find that this dialogue is important for getting to know students and understanding issues that might affect their ability to learn the material that day. Usually, students also have questions about university, so we answer those as well. This extra information is one of the most important reasons to hire a tutor in Dubai.

Next, we introduce the subject for the day. Maybe we have a few problems that we do to recap the previous lessons.

Then…we get to it!

Whether we are reviewing algebra 2 or geometry or grammar, we don’t assume that students know the fundamentals. We briefly discuss the fundamentals and tailor the tutoring to what the student already knows and what she needs to know. Without the live lesson format, we would not be able to assess the student and redirect our approach as we go.

In all of our lessons, students do problems. Like, how do you study for the SAT if you don’t practice?

We start off with guided exercises that the tutor helps with. We then let go of the reins a bit and ask the student to lead us through the problem. The last problem the student does on her own–we call it concept checking–to see if she gets it. If not, we discuss, discuss, discuss. It is VERY difficult to take this approach with a pre-recorded course.

We also review your digital SAT practice tests with you to ensure you get the maximum benefit from your studying.

4. 100% Private

Are we recording the lessons? Nope.

Are these lessons open to the world or other students? Nope.

Can students around the world join the class like on Outschool or any MOOC you’ve heard of? Nope.

Our Zoom SAT prep classes are 100% private and secure. That’s why we love using Zoom. Students have to use the link or meeting code we send them to our PERSONAL Zoom room. There is also a password to get in.

Once in the waiting room, your tutor has to let you into the lesson. No one can join without the tutor’s permission and disturb your lesson.

5. 100% One-on-One

The previous explanation of our teaching technique explains why we keep our Zoom SAT prep classes 100% one-on-one.

That’s right! There are NO OTHER STUDENTS on the call.

Sure, we could do small groups, but we would lose the flexibility and personalization that comes from doing one-on-one classes.

Zoom SAT Prep Frequently Asked Questions

zoom sat prep in dubai

What are Zoom SAT prep classes in Dubai?

Zoom SAT prep classes in Dubai are online SAT private tutoring lessons offered by Apply Me. All lessons are 100% live, 100% private, and 100% one-on-one. Learn more about our online SAT prep.

Who are Zoom SAT prep lessons for?

Everyone! Since the global pandemic, just about every high school student is used to learning online. Even the ones who hated it during school like our online tutoring. Here’s why:

  • You get to interact with the instructor.
  • You talk one-on-one.
  • We move at the pace the student wants. If we don’t finish a lesson, we do it next time.
  • It’s easy to add extra time to a session if we’re working on a concept.
  • There’s no one else to disturb your learning.
  • We do practice problems solo and together. Yes, your tutor will wait 10 minutes while you complete a reading passage that we then discuss.
  • You get immediate feedback. No waiting for things to be graded or reviewed.

What do we cover in our lessons?

All of the same topics as in in-person SAT lessons. The lessons and problems are EXACTLY the same whether you study online or in person.

Where do the Zoom SAT prep classes happen in Dubai and the UAE?

All classes happen over the internet. The instructor is based in Dubai, not somewhere else. Most of the time, she’s sitting at home in her tiny office (just ignore the barking dog).

In fact, she has 15 years of experience teaching students in Dubai just like you.

Do you offer classes to students in other Emirates?

Yes, we do! That’s one of the great benefits of working online in the UAE. You can sit in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, or one of the other Emirates and get access to a great tutor in Dubai!

We have students from all over the UAE and we meet on Zoom. W do the payments as transfers so we don’t have to meet in person to get the whole thing done.

Can’t I just hire an SAT tutor in the US?

You certainly can, but here are the benefits of hiring a tutor with experience working with students in Dubai:

  1. She knows how to tailor the lesson for non-native (near-native) English speakers. Many people who don’t have experience teaching students from different cultures speak too fast or use too many country-specific phrases.
  2. Your tutor is familiar with different education systems. British, Indian, IB, Government…she knows all about each of these systems. A tutor who has only taught in America won’t have experience with these systems and understand the difference in teaching style or approach. In short, the tutor will not be able to effectively tailor the lessons to how YOU learn. And that’s the whole point of private tutoring, right?
  3. She knows how to apply to the US, Canada, UK, etc. from OUTSIDE the US. Trust us, Americans basically only know about going to university in the US from the US. They don’t know about the process for international students. Your Dubai-based tutor can answer all of these questions because she has experience helping students apply from the UAE and she was born and raised in America.

How do the Zoom SAT prep classes work?

We coordinate the lessons just like in-person SAT prep lessons. At the student’s class time, she uses the code and password provided to join our personal meeting room.

During the lesson, we talk, learn, and practice just like an in-person course. We have worked hard to keep the format the same but actually lowered the price since we don’t have to spend time and gas driving to students’ homes.

That’s right…

In addition to being more flexibility and usually easier than in-person prep, Zoom SAT prep classes in Dubai are CHEAPER!

Need help preparing for the Digital SAT?

Whatsapp us to chat with an American SAT instructor with more than 15 years of experience teaching SAT to students just like you. Our students see a minimum of 150-point score improvement! Want to know more first? Check out our online and in-person options.

Kira Video Interview: 6 Tips to Help You Nail It

More and more universities–from the best business schools to competitive undergraduate programs–are using a Kira video interview (also known as Kira Talent interviews) in their admissions process. We have seen them used by undergraduate programs in Canada, such as the University of Waterloo, and top MBA programs, such as INSEAD. The Kira video interview is often in addition to a traditional interview on Zoom.

Since these types of interviews are growing in importance, you want to make sure you are ready in case you have to do one. Here are our top 6 tips to help you nail the Kira interview.

But first…

What is a Kira video interview?

kira video interview dubai
Source: Kira Talent

A Kira video interview is an online video interview. The Kira Talent platform allows applicants to log in, see random questions from a question bank, and record video answers.

Different universities take different approaches, but here’s what we’ve seen the most:

  • A random question pops up on the screen. Something like “Tell us about a time you showed you were a leader.”
  • You have 30 to 60 seconds to prepare your answer.
  • The camera on your computer comes on automatically and records your response.
  • You will have between 3 and 5 questions from a selection chosen by the university. No candidate has the exact same questions in this instance.
  • Some universities have a video essay that is just one question and is the same for everyone.

Watch this video for more about the platform:

6 Tips to Help You Nail Your Kira Video Interview

1. Create quick notes for each of the following questions.

You may be asked almost anything because the questions come from a bank, but it is helpful if you have some ideas brewing.

  • How do you work under pressure?
  • Tell me about a time when you had many tasks you had to work on at the same time. How did you prioritize?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to make a quick decision? What were the circumstances and what did you do?
  • Describe an accomplishment that has given you the most satisfaction and why?
  • Tell us something about yourself that we cannot find in your application.
  • How would you describe yourself?
  • Tell us about a person or an event that has been influential in your personal development.
  • How do you think a close family member or friend would describe you?
  • How would you define leadership?
  • Tell me about a time when you went out of your way to help a colleague or a client.
  • Do you think social responsibility should always take precedence over profit? Why or why not?
  • Tell me about a time when you worked successfully as a part of a team.
  • How would you explain Facebook to your grandma?
  • Tell me about a time when you were the only person holding an idea you felt strongly about. How did you share your position? What was the outcome?
  • Tell me about a time when you and another individual had to compromise to reach an agreement. How did you reach the agreement?
  • What is the most #1 song played on your laptop?

Want more questions? Check out this HUGE list of sample Kira interview questions that we have compiled.

2. Pick 5 of the above questions and record yourself answering the question.

You can use the record function on zoom to do this easily. Be sure to check everything that you would for a video interview like lighting and background. You also want to check the way you speak for “ums” and “ahs” as well as clarity.

If you plan to record more questions, you can just use your phone and then move to zoom recording.

Watch the video each time and really scrutinize yourself:

  • Can the lighting be better?
  • Did you answer the question directly?
  • Did you offer an example or additional explanation?
  • How long was your answer? (Minutes and seconds count!)
  • Did you use all the time allocated or did you stop with time left?
  • Did your response get cut off (It shouldn’t!)
  • Is there something you can mention that highlights your personality and values in addition to answering the question?

3. Use the prep time!

When recording the actual video interview, use the 30 to 60 second prep time to jot down 2 or 3 points that you will cover when you answer.

This alone will vastly improve the clarity of your answer.

It’s ok to have a blank piece of paper and a pen there to write the notes. Just a few quick words numbered from 1 to 3. Nothing fancy…nothing extensive. Just enough notes to keep you focused.

You want to have these ideas in mind so that you can start talking as soon as the camera starts recording.

4. Take a break.

If possible, take a small break between video questions to reset and regroup.

5. Remember what you covered in your essays.

Don’t retell the same stories or points. Also, don’t refer to the essays as in “I already mentioned this in essay 1.” They have already read the essays and if the question pops up again, it means this is important to them. So, answer it with a fresh approach.

6. You are preparing to get your mind in the right space.

BUT don’t memorize any answers because you want to be natural and fluid.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Kira Video Interview

What is the Kira interview dress code?

We think business casual works best to maintain the slightly informal style of the interview. For ladies, that means a nice blouse. For men, a professional button-up shirt without a tie or jacket will do. One aspect of the Kira video interview that we like is that it is meant to reflect your personality more than a traditional interview.

However…

There’s a difference between having personality and being totally lackadaisical. Show you are a professional…at least from the waist up. No one has to see your pajama pants on the bottom.

Does Kira Talent record your screen?

The Kira Talent program doesn’t record your screen: it records you! You’ll be given a question and a short time to prepare. Then, the light and camera will come on to record your response automatically. Be ready!

The program won’t record your screen, but it will prevent you from being able to look elsewhere on your computer for notes. That’s why taking notes on paper is so critical.

How can I introduce myself during the interview?

As naturally as possible! The usual name, title, company, place of origin, and the number of years in Dubai should be enough.

For example, I would say:

“Hi, my name is Eden June Michael. I am the Executive MBA tutor and admissions consultant for Apply Me. I’m originally from Atlanta, Georgia in the United States and have been living in Dubai for the past 14 years.”

Easy!

LBS Dubai EMBA Resume’/CV: 5 Things Other Applicants Know

If you’re applying to the LBS Dubai EMBA program, you need a specific resume’ (or CV) for that program. In fact, go ahead and open up a word or Google doc called “LBS Dubai EMBA Resume” and work along as we give you the do’s, don’ts, and a template to download (yes!).

1. You should submit your CV for review by LBS.

Before you start creating your LBS Dubai EMBA resume’, you have to understand its importance. Not only will it be part of your application, but you can also submit it to LBS Dubai for a preliminary review. Ideally, this review, will get them excited about your application and make them WANT to ACCEPT you into the program. They should immediately see the value you can add to others in the program.

However…

You cannot submit the same CV that you blast out to recruiters for the LBS Dubai EMBA program. Since they are an academic institution, they aren’t going to fawn over your industry jargon or send your CV through a program looking for keywords. Actual people are going to read this CV.

So, you need to totally revise or rebuild your CV from scratch. Fortunately, the following tips will help.

2. Use the right one-page template.

Yes, one page. Even if your current CV is 5 pages of greatness, you can’t submit it. The application requires one page, so you should send only a one-page CV for review.

It is absolutely possible to condense even the longest CVs to one page. You simply have to include only the most important items from the admissions officer’s perspective. For example, does she need to know about all of your industry publications? Probably not.

Does she need to know every single work event you attended or certification you have acquired? Nope.

We recommend starting with a decent one-page blank template and copying only the most relevant information into it.

Fortunately, you can download this LBS Dubai EMBA Resume CV Template as a starting point.

We have set the paper size at A4, the margins at 0.5 inches, the font at Times New Roman, and the font size at 10-point. You should leave the settings as we have set them for the clearest presentation. Can you change the gray to a line underneath? Sure.

But don’t toy around with the formatting too much. Remember, your CV will be read by a person, and presentation counts.

3. Your LBS Dubai EMBA resume’ needs 3 categories.

As you can see on the template, your CV should include work experience, education, and additional information…in that order.

Work Experience

Work experience should include your professional experience that is related to your career starting at your current position. You can include 3 to 5 jobs and keep the CV on one page. If you had different positions within the same organization and location, try to group them so that they take up less space on the page.

Work experience is the most important section of your CV. Here’s what LBS has to say about it:

Make sure it’s written clearly, free of business jargon, and a true representation of what your job is.

Remember, this CV has to be read by a person who might not know anything about your industry.

Education

The second section–education–is short but hugely relevant. List any higher education (undergraduate/graduate/postgraduate) and degrees you have received. You have the option to include short and certification courses here, but keep space in mind. Only the most important and relevant items should be included.

Aditional Information

The last section is additional information. It’s there to mention any skills or interests that make you well-rounded or a “high performer” but are not necessarily related to your career or education. We like to see community service, languages, and bizarre interests. You should also include any groups you started or leadership positions you have that are not job-related. For example, if you sit on the board of a nonprofit organization…include it! Additionally, you can include certifications if you have page space.

4. Focus bullet points on outcomes, not descriptions.

The very first bullet point under each job should highlight your leadership and management experience. Specify the number of people you supervise or manage. If you have no direct reports, add agencies, subcontractors, or external companies that you may liaise with. This is all valuable management experience that an admissions officer needs to see first.

However, you cannot just list down what you need to do. You also have to offer the outcome. More numbers are better. Here’s an example of an outcome-based bullet point:

Supervised 3 direct reports; increased productivity by 17% in one year.

Of course, you want to mix it up a little. Not all of your bullet points should be number-filled one-liners. Use your best judgment. Want a second opinion? Whatsapp us and we’ll set up a call.

5. Write your CV with your specialization in mind.

The best applicants are writing this CV with their specialization in mind. The LBS Dubai EMBA program has more than 70 electives that you can organize around 7 specializations or concentrations:

  • accounting
  • economics
  • finance
  • management science and operations
  • marketing
  • organizational behavior
  • strategy and entrepreneurship

While you can take courses from any area, it is in your best interest to be laser-focused on a specialization. Specific ones should speak to your goals more than others. For example, if you own your own business, you probably want strategy and entrepreneurship because it is simply more applicable to your goal of building your business or entering small business consulting. Unless the company you own is a financial services company, a specialization like finance would probably be of little benefit. Plus, you don’t want to select one you have to spend a lot of time explaining.

Once you’ve selected your specialization, take a look at your CV and see if there is anywhere you can tie in or highlight specific items of interest for that specialization. In our entrepreneur example, you might list:

  • Businesses that you founded (even if you have a day job)
  • Brands you bought or own
  • Business clubs or meetups you participate in
  • Any initiatives you launched that demonstrate you have potential as an entrepreneur

We see very few applicants tie in their specializations, so make sure you do!

LBS Dubai EMBA Resume/CV Don’ts

Just for complete clarity, we recommend that you DON’T do these things on your LBS Dubai EMBA resume’/CV:

  • Add a picture. It’s not necessary and you don’t have the space.
  • Make the margins and font super small. The resume’ has to be readable.
  • Put more than seven bullet points under one job. Choose only the most important or those that have an outcome associated with them.
  • Hide your leadership and management experience. Even consultants with no direct reports manage projects that involve people, so put this info front and center.
  • Use alternative resume’ formats. An admissions officer should be able to look at your resume’ and see what you did in every position.
  • Include every job you ever had. It’s just not relevant.
  • Use the same verbs over and over. It’s boring. Use a thesaurus or Grammarly to help you find other words.

Should I take IELTS or GRE first in Dubai?

So you want to go to graduate school…well, you’ll probably have to take both the IELTS and the GRE. But which should you take first in Dubai: IELTS or GRE?

We think you should study for the GRE first but take the IELTS first. Confused yet? Good! We’ll explain this test planning strategy that will help streamline your overall preparation.

IELTS or GRE First? Study for the GRE First!

Studying for the GRE is a marathon, not a sprint. You have to cover lots of math concepts, everything from basic number properties to geometry.

And don’t even get us started on the GRE verbal…

It’s a beast.

You’ll have to learn Greek and Latin root words, practice tons of reading passages, and STILL need a bit of luck to do well when the time comes. Even with an amazing tutor!

Then there are the essays

You don’t need an amazing score BUT you do need to make the process of writing them easy because the essays are the first 1 hour of the nearly 4-hour test. Bomb the essays and your morale is shot for the rest of the test.

So yeah, there is a lot to study. GRE prep usually takes from 2 to 4 months depending on your intensity of study. We recommend 4 months because that gives you time to do lots of practice tests. You’ll need lots of full-length practice to get used to the alternating quantitative and verbal sections as well as the 4-hour length.

IELTS or GRE First? Take the IELTS First!

Studying for the IELTS does not take nearly as long. There is also no math because the IELTS is a test of English as a foreign language, not an admissions test like the GRE.

Here’s our recommendation:

Once you finish preparing for the content of the GRE verbal, do IELTS practice tests. Pay close attention to the listening and speaking sections practice because these skills are not included in what you have already studied.

Then…

Go take the IELTS.

The Academic IELTS is offered just about every Saturday at many locations around Dubai, so you don’t need to wait long. We recommend taking the IELTS after two weeks of practice testing. Take between two and four tests, then go!

Why Our Strategy Works

We use this strategy with just about every GRE student that we teach. Here’s why the strategy works:

1. You are already prepared for the reading and writing from your GRE prep.

GRE reading and writing are definitely harder than IELTS reading and writing. Once you have prepared for that part of the GRE, there are only some small changes you need to make when you take the IELTS.

Students who prepare for the GRE with us get this IELTS help FREE (yes! FREE!):

  • IELTS essay templates
  • IELTS essay examples
  • Grading your IELTS practice test essays
  • Strategy discussion for both IELTS reading and writing

If you don’t do private GRE tutoring with us, you will have to pay to have someone help you with the IELTS (or go it alone).

2. You are in test mode.

You’ve already started studying for the GRE so it’s quite easy to add studying for the IELTS. Two practice tests and you’re done.

3. It reduces the overall study time.

You will not be studying for the IELTS separately, which is what most test centers will want you to do. That way, they can sell you a GRE and IELTS course.

But…let’s be honest…

If you can take the GRE, your level of English is more than high enough to score a band 7.0 or more on the IELTS. Just save your money for GRE preparation, rather than IELTS.

Here’s What Extra Help You Do Need

Listening Preparation

This section is not included on the GRE and it surprises everyone. You have to focus on conversations and talks for an entire 20 minutes (no one does this in real life). The listening is only played one time, so you’ve got to be ready.

We offer FREE listening help for students who prepare for the GRE with us.

Speaking Preparation

Speaking is the MOST underrated section of the IELTS. You think, “I speak English so it should be easy to just have a conversation, right?”

For the IELTS, wrong!

You need to know the format of the speaking section, so you know how the questions will be asked. You’ve got to practice conversing about random topics so that you don’t spend too much time thinking before you answer. You need to be able to prepare a short talk on the spot and nail it.

Developing IELTS speaking skills takes practice. We do all of this for FREE for students who prepare for the GRE with us.

Are Dubai SAT Tutors Worth It?

If you want to take the SAT, let’s just be honest…you can just find videos on the internet or cobble together some stuff from Khan Academy. There are even lots of “past papers” that you can download and work on until you think you know what you are doing. But is that the best way to prepare? Are Dubai SAT tutors worth it?

Obviously, we are biased. But, we think hiring an SAT tutor in Dubai is absolutely worth it. Here’s why:

1. You are also hiring an advisor.

The best tutors are absolutely itching to answer not only your SAT questions, but also your questions about admissions, colleges, and the university experience. That person can advise you informally on the process. Moreover, she can give feedback regarding your guidance counselors opinions about universities, deadlines, and more.

Often, our students ask us for university ideas, language tests like the IELTS, and GPAs. Any student who is not studying in the American system may not be familiar with the testing style of the SAT. Since we also do academic coaching, we know about many of the curricula in Dubai. That enables us to offer specific feedback based on the system a student is coming from.

Want to know more about how many extracurricular activities you should have? Don’t know if you should apply to schools in Canada and if you even need the SAT for that? Wondering how many schools to apply to?

A good tutor can answer all these questions and more.

2. The internet doesn’t talk back.

Khan Academy videos aren’t going to answer your specific question about counting problems. It’s not going to explain the same question in a different way. It’s not going to figure out that your problem with algebra is because you need a review of signed numbers.

Preparing for the SAT online using a prerecorded course is a one-way conversation. It can be helpful, but without a live person to ask questions, you’re shortchanging yourself on your prep.

Yes, you can Google the answers to your questions…

But which way is the best way? Your tutor knows.

One of the most frequent questions we are asked about the reading section, for example, is if a student should read the whole passage. How do we know the answer?

During the first reading lesson, we time how long it takes you to read the passage. We make our recommendation based upon our observation of you. The internet isn’t going to do that for you.

3. The internet doesn’t have an opinion.

Is Drexel better than Loyola? Are you really cut out for engineering or should you go into finance? What’s a good major for someone who likes theater but doesn’t want to be an actor?

You can Google all day but the internet isn’t going to learn your personality and answer give you a personalized answer. General answers, sure. One just for you? Nope.

4. Your tutor’s energy is important.

Preparing for the SAT is tiring. You have school, homework, extracurricular activities, family obligations, and more. You’re tired.

But…

Your tutor isn’t. She’s going to show up bright and excited about learning. She’s going to be well-prepared and happy to answer your questions. She will gently guide you when you have a “brain fart.”

Most importantly, she’s seen many students–just like you–go through this exact process and succeed. So many of her other students will have gotten their happy academic ending, so she knows that you can get yours. Want to see how it turned out for our students? Read our testimonials.

5. Your tutor will provide valuable accountability.

We cannot stress this enough–tutors provide accountability.

If you’re tired, you can just study tomorrow…

Unless you have to meet with your tutor.

Don’t feel like taking the December SAT? Maybe you can leave it until March…

Unless your tutor is expecting you to do it in December.

You don’t have to study, do homework, or sit for practice tests…

Unless your tutor is waiting for the results.

You get the point. Here’s what the makers of the SAT have to say about your testing strategy:

A good tutor will keep you on track to make sure you reach your education goals. Have the discipline to make it without one? Maybe, but you might not realize that you don’t until the SAT is next week and you haven’t studied enough. We wouldn’t take chances, though. So ask yourself: do you feel lucky?

LBS Dubai Video Interview: 5 Tips to Help You Ace It

So, you’ve completed your essays, submitted your application, and taken the GMAT or EA…and you’ve been invited for an LBS Dubai video interview.

Congratulations! You made it to the next (and probably most important) step in the process. All of the work you have done so far is to get you to this point. The LBS admissions committee is interested enough in your profile that they want to know more about you and verify what they have gleaned from your documentation thus far.

Despite all that effort, in order to get into the LBS Dubai EMBA program, you will have to ace the LBS Dubai video interview. It will more than likely be conducted over Zoom. You’ll be notified with enough time to schedule and prepare, so use your time wisely. Here are our tips (the same ones we give our clients), to help you ace the LBS Dubai video interview.

How to Ace the LBS Dubai Video Interview

1. Write your talking points beforehand.

Wouldn’t it be weird if you showed up to an interview with prepared notecards? Fortunately, this interview is done online, so no one will ever see our notes! We encourage our clients to make quick notes on the answers to the questions before the interview. Just 2-3 short talking points for each question. You can refer to them briefly during the interview to make sure you have a ready response to questions and help you stay on track.

Don’t make lengthy notes because you won’t have time to look at them…and you definitely should not be reading them.

2. Be sure to answer what they asked, not what you wanted to tell them.

You’ve worked hard during your career and you want the admissions committee to know that. They will–from your resume’. Since they already read your resume’ and essays, don’t bring up a lot of the same points during the video interview. Try to tell them new things about you or tell short stories that you couldn’t tell in the application.

No matter what, answer the question they asked! Don’t go on and on about things you want them to know but did not ask about.

You are probably thinking: I speak with others regularly, I am an excellent communicator,  or I interview others so I know what to say. Trust us…re-evaluate how you are answering questions and take the time to really ensure that you give a focused answer. If necessary, have a “mock interview” with a friend or trusted colleague.

3. Try to keep the tone conversational.

You’ve got notes. You’ve done a mock interview. You’re ready, but…

Don’t be a robot!

The line between robotic and professional is not as fine as you think. It is possible to be friendly and professional. If you keep the tone just slightly (and we mean just slightly) casual, then the conversation will be more comfortable for them and you. You will project confidence and truth.

Just remember: it’s not an interrogation.

4. Check your zoom view before the interview.

lbs dubai zoom interview

Obviously, you need to be business casual during the zoom interview. Just because you are at home doesn’t mean professionalism goes out the window. You should be somewhere in between a stained t-shirt and a full suit with a jacket. Our favorite look is a starched white or blue button-up shirt (for ladies and gentlemen). All this you probably know since you’ve been working from home for at least the last year.

Here’s what you need to manage as well: your zoom view.

  • Background: The less the admissions committee can see of it the better. The background doesn’t have to be plain, but it shouldn’t clearly be your bedroom. If you have a plain white wall in a room, move the desk in and a tall potted plant. It offers some visual interest and makes your place look corporate. Do not use virtual backgrounds because they slow down your zoom speed.
  • Aspect: Ideally, the admissions committee should see your head and half of your upper body. If you are sitting at a desk, you will naturally hit this position. Get closer to the desk or bring your computer closer to ensure less of you is showing. However, don’t do an extreme close-up for 30 minutes. If you open a zoom meeting on your own and see the mirror view, you will be able to see exactly what they will see.
  • Lighting: Turn the light on the room just to be sure. You are better lit in zoom than you think, so don’t overdo it with the lighting.

5. Present one narrative.

Reread your essays and make sure your verbal answers match the written ones if you are asked the same question. Sometimes you have to simplify your ambitions on paper so that they make sense in an essay. They should follow the same pattern during the LBS Dubai video interview. Don’t talk about the three different career paths you want to be on or get too personal. If you would not write it in an essay, do not say it during the interview.

What you present during your LBS Dubai video interview should represent you as one whole, focused professional. If they consider your resume’, application, essays, references, and video interview as a whole (which they will), every aspect should harmonize and tell the story you want to tell.

GRE Argument Essay Template and Sample Argument Essay

This essay is no longer included on the GRE.

The second essay you’ll have to write when you sit down to take the GRE is the GRE Argument Essay. It’s only 30 minutes and can be a bit of a challenge…

So you need a strong game plan.

But should you really worry about the essays since they don’t factor into your quantitative and verbal scores?

Absolutely!

We tell our students that while the essay scores may not be of importance to graduate programs, the ease of writing them should be important to you. The Analysis of an Issue and Argument essays are the first sections of the GRE. You don’t want to go into them frazzled and anxious. You definitely don’t want to finish them feeling like you could have done better. Unfortunately, this anxiety will carry into the rest of the test and NOT pave the road to earning your best GRE score.

To help you relax into the essays and the rest of the test, we’re sharing the exact template and sample essay we show our GRE students. Before you take a look, read these tips on how to practice with them.

GRE Argument Essay Practice Tips

1. Words to use in every argument essay are in blue on the template.

You want to have these transitions and links well practice so that you can use them automatically on the test. Obviously, this essay is HIGHLY dependent on the one provided in the prompt, so much of what you write is unique to the question.

2. Your GRE argument essay should be 4 or 5 paragraphs depending on the question.

Some questions ask you to evaluate another opinion, discuss a disadvantage, or give an opposing viewpoint. Therefore, you need another body paragraph to respond to that part of the prompt.

3. The sample GRE argument essay is directly from ETS, so don’t copy the essay.

Think about how your examples and reasons can be used to respond to the prompt.

4. PEEL!

PEEL means Point – Example – Explanation – Link. The blue in the sample essay shows how well the body paragraphs conform to the PEEL writing format.

5. Always outline your essay first.

It is very obvious to a trained reader when students don’t outline their essays first. You just have to jot down your opinion and reasons or examples in a quick list. This quick outline will help keep you focused and make your writing more cohesive.

6. Check out the full list of GRE argument essay prompts.

You shouldn’t write essays for each prompt (there are a lot). However, you should read over the whole list looking for differences in the ways questions are asked. Then, pick 10 prompts to practice outlining. Of those 10, pick 5 essays to write fully.

7. For extra practice, work on the parts, rather than the whole.

Just write an introduction, a body paragraph, or a conclusion for some of the essay prompts. After outlining, of course. This type of focused writing will improve the individual parts of the essay, resulting in an entire essay that is much better overall. You don’t have to write the parts for the same essay. Switch it up!

8. When you write a full essay, do it in 30 minutes.

Practice the way you are going to perform. By the time you write your second full essay, you should be writing in only 30 minutes. Set a timer and type the essay on the computer without using spell check or Grammarly. Ideally, you will write the essays when you do a full-length GRE practice test. It’s important to develop stamina for the full 4-hour test.

GRE Argument Essay Template

In the argument provided [or letter or memorandum], the author asserts that [his recommendation or proposal]. The author’s argument does not make a persuasive case for [goal of the argument]. This argument lacks sufficient logical reasoning and appropriate evidence, and thus, is not strong enough to [goal of the argument].

First, write your first reason that the argument is not sound here. For example, put your example of the assumptions the argument depends on here. You can use quotation marks if you directly reference the text. Explain your example with consideration of the stated and unstated assumptions. To strengthen her argument, the author would benefit from add the link to your thesis about the argument here.

In addition, write your second reason that the argument is not sound here. For instance, put your example here. Explain your example with consideration of the stated and unstated assumptions. Unless add specific link to the argument, it can not be used to effectively back the author’s argument.

[You may need another paragraph depending on what the prompt asks you to do.]

The conclusion should consist of a restatement of the argument goal, a restatement of your thesis, and a closer. The location of these in the paragraph will be different based on how you choose to write it.

GRE Argument Essay Sample Prompt

In surveys, Mason City residents rank water sports (swimming, boating and fishing) among their favorite recreational activities. The Mason River flowing through the city is rarely used for these pursuits, however, and the city park department devotes little of its budget to maintaining riverside recreational facilities. For years there have been complaints from residents about the quality of the river’s water and the river’s smell. In response, the state has recently announced plans to clean up Mason River. Use of the river for water sports is therefore sure to increase. The city government should for that reason devote more money in this year’s budget to riverside recreational facilities.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on the assumptions and what the implications are if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

Sample GRE Argument Essay

[Restatement of the given argument] In the argument provided, the author asserts that the Mason City government ought to devote more money to riverside recreational facilities. [Your thesis] The author’s argument does not make a cogent case for increased resources based on river use. [Overview of reasons related to goal] This argument is rife with holes and assumptions, and thus, not strong enough to lead to increased funding.

[First reason] Citing surveys of city residents, the author reports city resident’s love of water sports. It is not clear, however, the scope and validity of that survey. [Example] For example, the survey could have asked residents if they prefer using the river for water sports or would like to see a hydroelectric dam built, which may have swayed residents toward river sports. [Explanation] The sample may not have been representative of city residents, asking only those residents who live upon the river. The survey may have been 10 pages long, with 2 questions dedicated to river sports. We just do not know. [Link] Unless the survey is fully representative, valid, and reliable, it can not be used to effectively back the author’s argument.

[Second reason] Additionally, the author implies that residents do not use the river for swimming, boating, and fishing, despite their professed interest, because the water is polluted and smelly. [Explanation] While a polluted, smelly river would likely cut down on river sports, a concrete connection between the resident’s lack of river use and the river’s current state is not effectively made. Though there have been complaints, we do not know if there have been numerous complaints from a wide range of people, or perhaps from one or two individuals who made numerous complaints. [Link] To strengthen his/her argument, the author would benefit from implementing a normed survey asking a wide range of residents why they do not currently use the river.

[Third reason] Building upon the implication that residents do not use the river due to the quality of the river’s water and the smell, the author suggests that a river clean up will result in increased river usage. If the river’s water quality and smell result from problems which can be cleaned, this may be true. [Example] For example, if the decreased water quality and aroma is caused by pollution by factories along the river, this conceivably could be remedied. But if the quality and aroma results from the natural mineral deposits in the water or surrounding rock, this may not be true. [Explanation] There are some bodies of water which emit a strong smell of sulphur due to the geography of the area. This is not something likely to be afffected by a clean-up. Consequently, a river clean up may have no impact upon river usage. [Link] Regardless of whether the river’s quality is able to be improved or not, the author does not effectively show a connection between water quality and river usage.

[Closer] A clean, beautiful, safe river often adds to a city’s property values, leads to increased tourism and revenue from those who come to take advantage of the river, and a better overall quality of life for residents. [Restatement of the given argument/goal] For these reasons, city government may decide to invest in improving riverside recreational facilities. [Restatement of thesis] However, this author’s argument is not likely significantly persuade the city goverment to allocate increased funding.

In Arabic we have a saying, “[relevant quote here even if you have to make it up].” Write your thesis as a direct response to the statement in the prompt. Preview your reasons in 1 sentence.

First, write your first reason here. For example, put your example here. Explain your example making sure to include as many vivid details as possible. [Example name]’s example demonstrates that [reason 1 again].

Second, write your second reason here. For instance, put your example here. Explain your example making sure to include as many vivid details as possible.

[You may need another paragraph depending on what the prompt asks you to do.]

In summary, restate thesis. Restate your two reasons here. The examples of [example 1] and [example 2] show that [something profound related to the thesis].

GRE Issue Essay Sample Prompt

As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

Sample GRE Issue Essay

[Hook] Surely there has been no time in history where the lived lives of people have changed more dramatically. [Thesis] Over the past century, technology has positively affected free thinking and human experience. [Preview of reasons] Not only does technology offer humans the necessary efficiency to tackle big problems, but it also unlocks the imagination to design solutions.

[Point] First, technology releases additional time for people to live more efficiently. [Example] For example, most people commute to work in an automobile that runs on an internal combustion engine. During the workday, chances are high that the employee will interact with a computer that processes information on silicon bridges that are .09 microns wide. Upon leaving home, family members will be reached through wireless networks that utilize satellites orbiting the earth. [Explanation] Without a car, computer, or mobile phone, the average worker would need to find alternate methods of transport, information processing and communication. [Link] Technology allows humans to spend time solving important high-level problems, rather than generating repetitive solutions to mundane issues.

[Point] Second, technology frees the human imagination to achieve once impossible goals. [Example] Consider how the late 20th century witnessed the complete elimination of smallpox. [Explanation]  This disease had ravaged the human race since prehistorical days, and yet with the technology of vaccines, free thinking humans dared to imagine a world free of smallpox. Using technology, battle plans were drawn out, and smallpox was systematically targeted and eradicated. [Link] By increasing reliance on technology, doctors were able to use it to provide hope to the future of humanity.

[This paragraph is necessary because the prompt asks to consider when your opinion might not hold true.]

[Point] The efficiency and imagination stimulated by technology does not preclude the need for humans to think for themselves. In fact, technology frees humanity to not only tackle new problems, but may itself create new issues that did not exist without technology, thereby requiring even more imagination to solve them. [Example] For instance, the proliferation of automobiles has introduced a need for fuel conservation on a global scale. With increasing energy demands from emerging markets, global warming becomes a concern inconceivable to the horse-and-buggy generation. [Explanation] Likewise, dependence on oil has created nation-states that are not dependent on taxation, allowing ruling parties to oppress minority groups such as women. [Link] Solutions to these complex problems require the unfettered imaginations of maverick scientists and politicians.

[Restatement of thesis] In summary, there is no need to fear the deleterious effects of technology on humans’ ability to think. [Restatement of reasons] Technology can free time and imagination for solving important problems. [Restatement of examples] Technology will always mark the human experience, from the invention of the automobile to the implementation of nanotechnology. Given the history of the human race, there will be no limit to the number of problems, both new and old, for us to tackle. [Closer] There is no need to retreat to a Luddite attitude to new things, but rather embrace a hopeful posture to the possibilities that technology provides for new avenues of human imagination.

Quick Tips to Maximize Your Chances of Getting In

1. Take the essays seriously.

Hopefully, you have been to the INSEAD information events and the admissions officers know your name. However, other than a meeting and a few emails, INSEAD admissions will not know anything about you…until they read the essays. So, make the essays count.

2. Start early.

Create your online application account, download the essay template, and start brainstorming. The essays definitely cannot be left until the last moment. Start them early.

3. Get help if you need it.

Don’t want to hire an admissions editor like us? Ok, but make sure you have a couple of people that can review your essays. Moreover, they should be willing to actually rework sections that could be better. Most importantly, they should give you their unbiased opinions of the essays. There’s a lot at stake…

4. Stick to the word count.

A word on word counts: 500 words max means 500 words max. Don’t go 10% over because you heard that would be acceptable. You must convey your thoughts precisely and succinctly.

Similarly, get as close to 500 words as possible without padding your essay with endless storytelling. If you can’t get to 500 words, you haven’t explained enough.
