Who Should Take the EA in Dubai?

If you’re applying to an MBA or Executive MBA program, you’ve probably heard the term “Executive Assessment” or “EA” floating around.

But do you need to take it?

Possibly. Here we’ll outline the 3 groups of people who need to take the EA in Dubai:

1. Anyone applying to an Executive MBA program locally or abroad should take the EA in Dubai

apply for the executive assessment in dubai

If you’re looking to go to London Business School Dubai, INSEAD Abu Dhabi, or any of the other fantastic EMBA programs in the region, you’ll need to take the Executive Assessment. Almost all of them accept the test.

The EA has become “the” EMBA admissions test of choice over the GMAT. Many programs internationally accept the test as well. If it’s not mentioned on their website, ask them.

Were you offered the choice of taking the EA or the GMAT?

Take the EA!

It’s shorter, tests fewer content areas, and all around a lower level of difficulty than the GMAT.

2. Anyone applying to an EMBA program within the next 5 years

man and girl

Your Executive Assessment score is good for (valid) for 5 years, so you can take the test now and use the score later.

It’s the perfect time to prepare for and take the Executive Assessment now if:

You’re taking a career break.
You have more time than you will when you start working again. Use the time you have off wisely and you’ll be happy you did!

You’re between jobs.
When you start working again, you won’t have as much time as you do now. Besides, it will help your mental health to have something career oriented to focus on. Once you start working again, you’ll still have that score in hand and apply to Executive MBA programs to further boost your career.

You’re planning to start a family, but will go back to work eventually.
The idea of studying with a baby may seem daunting, but it will help you maintain your identity and individuality. You can study whenever you have time and at your pace. Just imagine…you have the baby and your score will be good until she goes to kindergarten!

You’re waiting on the next big project, idea, or otherwise.
Don’t let a slow economy or coronavirus get you down! Rather than stressing about the low workload, prepare and ace your EA, so that when it does pick back up, you’re ready to apply for your EMBA.

3. Anyone who took the GMAT or GRE more than 5 years ago

executive in dubai

Maybe you thought you would do an MBA but didn’t. If you took the GMAT or GRE within the last 5 years, you can submit those scores with your EMBA application.

However, some programs may not accept a GMAT or GRE score more than 3 years old, so check with the admissions department. In our experience, it usually depends on your undergraduate GPA as well. If you had a good GPA (3.0 and above) and good GMAT or GRE score, they will more than likely assume you have consistent academic performance and accept the older score. If not, they will ask you to take the EA.

Frequently Asked Questions about Who Can Take the EA in Dubai

Is an EMBA the same as an MBA?

An Executive MBA is a Masters in Business Administration for professionals who have more than 10 years of work experience and (usually) significant leadership experiences. EMBA students tend to be later in their career than MBA students. A Masters in Business Administration is usually for students with two to eight years of experience. While EMBA and MBA students both take the same types of courses, EMBA programs tend to provide a higher level overview of topics from a management and leadership standpoint.

Does INSEAD accept the EA?

Yes, INSEAD does accept the EA. INSEAD typically requires a 151. In fact, we recommend you take the EA, not the INSEAD test. Check out our discussion on this topic to find out why.

What is the Executive Assessment in Dubai?

If you’re applying to an Executive MBA program in Dubai or abroad, you’ve probably been told that you can take the Executive Assessment instead of the GMAT and include the score with your application. But…what is the Executive Assessment (also known as the EA)?

We’ve been teaching the Executive Assessment in Dubai since the test was created, so we’ll explain what the Executive Assessment is from 5 perspectives.

An Admissions Test for Executive MBA Programs

The EA is to EMBA programs as the GMAT is to MBA programs. Essentially, the Executive Assessment is becoming THE admissions test for Executive MBA programs. It’s widely accepted by top EMBA programs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, such as London Business School Dubai and INSEAD Abu Dhabi. Moreover, the EA is accepted by more than 50 elite (and not so elite) programs around the world. For a full list, check the website of the creators of the EA.

Want to know if your selected program accepts the EA? Ask them! Well ok, first check the admissions page of their website. If it’s not there, then send an email to the admissions office telling them you want to take the EA instead of the GMAT.

A Test of Your Ability to Handle Academic Rigors

girl studying executive assessment

You’ve got loads of work experience, so why would they give you an admissions test at all? Basically, they want proof that you’ve “still got it.” Getting a 150 on the Executive Assessment suggests to EMBA programs that you will be able to handle the academic nature of the program.

Although the test is aimed at professionals with 10 or more years of experience, it still tests algebra, grammar, arithmetic, and other concepts that you may not have seen in years. Yet, many programs consider mastery of these concepts essential to your academic success.

The most important score you’ll receive on the EA is for the quantitative math section. A solid quant score demonstrates that you can survive Managerial Accounting (for example) without a tutor. If you don’t score well on the quant, they will want you to complete even more tasks to prove you can handle the program.

A Test Made of 3 Sections

executive assessment test format

Now that you know what the Executive Assessment is for, here’s what it actually is:
Although the Integrated Reasoning is the first section, it tests the composite skills of quantitative (math) and verbal. Imagine answering questions about emails, charts, graphs, tables, and short texts.

The Quantitative Section is basically a math test. You’ll see questions that rely on concepts you would have seen in the 6th grade, as well as questions that require calculations based on algebra and word problems you would have learned up through the 10th grade. Fortunately, there’s no geometry, trigonometry, or calculus on the EA.

Verbal Reasoning tests your reading comprehension by asking you to answer questions related to a long reading passage. There are also sentences requiring you to correct grammar and shorter passages asking you to apply logic.

A Test of Your Resolve

military

Yes, preparing for the EA is a pain. You’ll have to reactivate concepts from elementary and middle school. You will struggle and doubt yourself along the way.

And that’s the point!

Many programs require the Executive Assessment of all students because it forces them to endure the same hardship to get into the program.

Moreover, it demonstrates that you can “double up.” Once you’re into the program, you’ll have to work and study, so there’s no better time to show that you can do it than when you’re applying.

What is the Executive Assessment in Dubai? Just a Number

executive assessment game

Will you score on the Executive Assessment determine your entire future?

Of course not!

Most programs require a 150 on the test, which is much easier than getting a high score on the GMAT. Once you get a 150, you’re done. They will move on to considering other parts of your application.

Your score on the EA is just to check a box, but it’s an important box…

And preparing properly is a way for you to get it this part of your application done the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions about What is the Executive Assessment in Dubai

What does the Executive Assessment test?

The Executive Assessment tests your quantitative and verbal skills. Check out the chart above for the exact sections and question types. It’s a bit of an Executive MBA readiness test. From our experience, EMBA programs are very concerned that:

  1. Your scores are balanced. In other words, you don’t have a really great quant score and a low verbal score.
  2. You have a strong quant score. As you can imagine, many of your EMBA courses will require strong quantitative skills. The EA is one way that EMBA programs can assess your quantitative abilities using a universal metric.
  3. You go through the pain of preparing for the test. This process gets you ready to study for your EMBA.

How hard is the Executive Assessment?

It depends on the student. The most challenging section for most students is the quantitative reasoning section. It has probably been many years since you studied algebra or probability, so reviewing for the test is essential. A skilled tutor (like us!) can help you through the process of preparing for the Executive Assessment in the least painful manner. It will also save you time in the long run because you won’t have to do extensive research and cobble together your own materials to prepare.

Engineers and finance professionals tend score well once they have prepared properly. Students that we have had in marketing, law, or a more verbal oriented field tend to require more work in the quant but shine in the verbal. Integrated reasoning tends to be straightforward for almost all students.

What is a good Executive Assessment score?

150. Most Executive MBA programs consider a 150 their acceptance cut off. Unlike the GMAT, higher is rarely better for the EA. Get your 150 and focus on the rest of your application.

Is 147 a good Executive Assessment score?

Yes! A 147 is a good STARTING Executive Assessment score. Unfortunately, it does not make the cut off for more Executive MBA programs. If your starting score is 147, it should be straightforward for you to score above a 150 if you put in the work.

SAT Cancelled in Dubai Because of Coronavirus: What Now?

0

Is the SAT cancelled in Dubai?

It’s official…

The College Board has cancelled the March and May 2020 SATs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the rest of the UAE because of the coronavirus.

Here’s what they posted on the College Board website:
sat-cancelled-in-dubai_orig
Since the March and May SATs are cancelled in Dubai, what should you do now? Here’s what we recommend:

1. Do NOT drive to Oman to take the test.

The SAT may still be happening in Oman because the country isn’t affected by the coronavirus, but you can’t take it there. You would have had to have registered to take the SAT there already. It would not be possible for you to change your test center to one in Oman at this point either.

Besides, if you are taking the March or May 2020 SATs, your college deadlines won’t be until November 2020 or later, so you have time to take the SAT in August or October. That’s even if you are doing SAT Subject Tests as well.

2. Register for the May 2020 exam IMMEDIATELY! (Update below)

UPDATE: The May 2020 SAT has been cancelled all around the world as well. The June SAT will only take place in the USA, not in countries outside of America. Find the next SAT on the College Board’s website.

It is very likely that once flu season is over, schools will reopen and things will go back to somewhat normal.

Therefore, the May SAT will probably still happen.(Nevermind…)

You need to register to take it immediately, so that you beat the rush of people rescheduling their March exams. It is possible that there will be a shortage of SAT seats in Dubai for the next exam, so you want to be sure you get yours.

But, “What about my refund?” you ask.

You will receive a full refund for the SAT from the College Board. However, it takes them up to 6 weeks to issue the refunds, so the registration deadline for the next exam would have already passed by the time you receive your refund.

It is better to spend the money to take the next SAT now, and get refunded later.

But, “What about my May exams?” you ask.

Well, if anything, the school closures across the UAE give you more time to prepare for both. If you continue your SAT and exam preparation, you will be in good shape to sit for both.

Which brings us to our next point…

3. Keep going with your SAT prep even though the SAT is cancelled in Dubai!

If you’ve finished reviewing all the content for the exam, you need to do at least 1 practice test a week to stay on top of your prep. Here’ what we recommend:

Day 1 – Full length practice test

  • The whole test with all 4 sections
  • In one sitting with minimal breaks
  • Timed according to the section timing on the test

Day 2 – Score and review the test thoroughly

  • You’ll be tempted to do this on day 1 but don’t
  • Check the test with the short answers and use the scoring chart to figure out your score
  • Go through each section of the test and really analyze why your answer is wrong and the correct answer is right
  • Reading = try to find the support for the correct answer in the passage and underline the words that make answers wrong
  • Writing = try to identify the grammar error and find the clues that lead you to the correct answer
  • Math = rework incorrect answers to completion. Do it over and over until you get the correct answer.

Day 3 – Review

  • Revise any concepts related to incorrect answers, so that you make sure you’ve got the right way
  • For APPLY ME students, go back to your strategy notes and review the concepts

Day 4 – Chill

  • Gotta let all that knowledge marinate!

4. Do at least 4 full length tests.

Since you’ve got plenty of time now, you need to focus on working as many problems as possible, so you get inside the mind of the SAT.

Done these already?

Get Kaplan’s SAT 8 Practice Tests or the Princeton Review’s 10 Practice Tests for the SAT. You should be able to get both of them from Borders or Kinokuniya in Dubai Mall.

No matter what…keep prepping right up to the May SAT.

Now get to work!

Tips for Your 2019-2020 SAT Subject Test Schedule

  1. The SAT Subject Tests are offered in November but there is no SAT given in this month. If you are taking the SAT Subject Tests, November is the month to take them.

  3. Take the regular SAT in October and then again in December if you are not happy with your score or did not take the SAT in 11th grade.
  4. If plan to take a Subject Test for a subject you took before, take it in the 11th grade. For example, if you had chemistry in the 10th grade and you plan to take the SAT Subject Test Chemistry, get it out of the way in the 11th grade. Don’t wait until the 12th grade to take it.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2019-2020 SAT

Can I register for the SAT in May even if it’s only November?
Yes you can! As long as there is a register link on the College Board website under the date, you can register to take the SAT on that date.Where can I take the SAT in Dubai?
Too many places to mention. Many schools in Dubai offer the SAT, so you can search on the College Board website for the one closest to you with available seats.

How many times can I take the SAT?
As many as you want. You have “Score Choice,” which means can send 1 or all your SAT scores to your chosen universities. They will only see the scores you send them, so they won’t know how many times you took the SAT. More than twice is kind of a waste of money though…

Do I need to take the SAT to apply to Canadian universities?
It depends on the university and the curriculum in which you are studying. In general, if you ware studying in an American curriculum school, you need to take the SAT. For example, McGill University requires an SAT score of 1150 minimum and 2 SAT Subject Test (like math and physics). Plan accordingly!

5 Things You Need to Know About the GMAT in Dubai (2019 Edition)

0

The GMAT in Dubai has to be one of the most feared admissions exams out there. Get a bad score on the GMAT and all your MBA hopes could evaporate. Get a good score and, all of a sudden, your low GPA or thin CV doesn’t matter as much.

For MBA applicants hoping to battle the GMAT in Dubai, we’ve outline 5 things you need to know about the GMAT in 2019.

1. There are 4 sections on the GMAT.

The GMAT has changed over the years and there’s lots of old information out there. Just to be clear, there are only 4 sections on the GMAT:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA): This is the essay
  • Integrated Reasoning (IR): A mix of math and reading with different types of questions
  • Verbal Reasoning: This is the reading and grammar part of the GMAT
  • Quantitative Reasoning: The math section

2. Two sections don’t count in your 200 to 800 score.

Many test takers don’t know that the Analytical Writing Assessment and Integrated Reasoning do not count in your 200 to 800 composite score on the GMAT. These 2 sections are scored separately and reported on the side.

What does this mean?

If London Business School says they want a minimum of 650, this score is WITHOUT the AWA and IR.

So couldn’t you just not do those sections?

You still have to do those sections of the test (and have a decent score) because business schools will still see your score. However, it makes preparing for the AWA and IR less important than preparing for the quant and verbal.

3. The GMAT changed (slightly) recently.

In 2018, the GMAT was shortened. The quant and verbal sections used to be 75 minutes long each. The makers of the GMAT reduced the number of questions in each section so that:

  • Quant has 31 questions in 62 minutes
  • Verbal has 36 questions in 65 minutes

You also know have 2 optional 8 minute breaks.

In total, the GMAT has gone from being a 3 and ½ hour test to taking just over 3 hours.

There was another big change as well:

4. You can choose the order of the GMAT sections.

In the past, everyone had to take the GMAT a certain way. Now, you can choose the order of the sections to help you maximize your score:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, Verbal (classic way to take the exam, NOT recommended)
  • Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment (recommended for students strong in quant)
  • Quantitative, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment (recommended for students strong in verbal)

5. GMAT preparation is a part-time job.

We’ve all heard stories of people walking into the GMAT in Dubai, no preparation or thought about the test at all, and scoring a 700. In more than 10 years, we’ve never met one. This is a GMAT urban legend.

Don’t underestimate how long or how much preparation the GMAT takes. Expect to spend at least 10 hours a week for 8 to 12 weeks preparing. Yup, that’s 80 to 120 hours of studying over 3 months.

Welcome to your part-time job!

Do I have to take the SAT for Canada universities?

Do you need to take the SAT for Canada? Many students assume that they only need to take the SAT if they are applying to universities in America. However, there are several universities in the UAE, and even Lebanon, that require a strong SAT score to be admitted.

Here’s a country that may require the SAT that you don’t expect: Canada.

There are specific instances when you need to take the SAT–and possibly even SAT Subject Tests–if you are applying to universities in Canada.
Here are the requirements for different students.

Students in American Curriculum Schools in Dubai

If you are a student in an American curriculum school in Dubai, most universities will require SAT scores.

To these universities, the SAT is like the International Baccalaureate for IB schools or A levels or British schools…

It’s just something you do before you graduate.

Not all universities in Canada require the SAT because your admission will be based almost solely on your grades.

It tends to be middle and top tier Canada universities that ask for the SAT. In addition, requirements will vary based on the major or program you are applying to. Here are a few examples for an engineering major:

Usually, the SAT essay is optional. However, University of Toronto DOES require the essay AND 2 SAT Subject Tests.

It’s so important to know where you want to go before you take the SAT!

Students in British Curriculum Schools in Dubai

Students in British curriculum schools in Dubai usually DO NOT have to take the SAT for universities in Canada. However, you should check the requirements of every program to which you want to apply.

Students in IB Schools in Dubai

Students in IB schools in Dubai usually DO NOT have to take the SAT for Canadian universities. However, you should check the requirements of every program to which you want to apply.

  2. You can take up to 3 SAT Subject Tests at the same session. Take the 2 you need on the same day and get it over with.

Subject Test Guidelines for Outside the US

For SAT Subject test taking purposes only, any student taking the SAT Subject Tests in Dubai is a considered an international student living outside the US (it doesn’t matter which passport you have).

Here are a few things you need to know about the 2018-2019 SAT Subject Test dates in Dubai:

  • There is no late registration for international testing.
  • SAT Subject Tests are generally given 5 times in any given school year, on the same days and in the same test centers as the SAT — but not all 20 tests are offered on every SAT date.
  • The Language with Listening tests are only offered in November.
  • You can take one, two, or three Subject Tests on any test date.
  • You can’t take the SAT and an SAT Subject Test on the same day.
  • Some SAT Subject Tests require you to bring special equipment — for example, CD players for Language with Listening tests.
  • When you register, you must tell us which SAT Subject Test(s) you plan to take. You can change your mind on test day, with limits.
  • You can’t switch to a Language with Listening Test that you’re not registered for, because they require special equipment.
  • Take only one Biology Subject Test per test date. After the first 60 questions, you have to choose either Biology Ecological or Biology Molecular; you can’t take both.
  • You can use calculators only on the Mathematics Level 1 and Level 2 Subject Tests.
  • The Language with Listening tests are always given in the first hour of testing. You can take only one Language with Listening test per test date.

5 Things You Need to Know About the SAT in Dubai

0

Last Updated: October 19, 2021

Taking the SAT in Dubai doesn’t have to be a pain in the you-know-what…as long as you know how it works here.

A lot of the information you find about the SAT online is either:

  • Too old: The SAT changed in 2016/2017 and many websites weren’t updated to reflect the different number of sections or changed topics; OR
  • For US students: The SAT is administered a bit differently for international students and many websites only provide information targeting US students.

But, don’t worry…

We’ve outlined 5 things you need to know about taking the SAT in Dubai.

1. The SAT is only offered 5 times a year in Dubai.

Unfortunately, you can’t take the SAT whenever you want to. You can’t even take it 6 times a year like you used to be able to. The SAT is only offered 5 times a year in countries outside the US. You can take the SAT in:

  • August
  • October
  • December
  • March
  • May

The limited offering means you definitely need to plan ahead. The best month to take the SAT in your 12th grade year is October. You will have had all summer to prepare. If you aren’t happy with your score from the October SAT, you’ll be able to take the December SAT and still make your university deadlines. You also won’t have many (if any) exams because school will have only recently started.

The worst month to take the SAT is in May. During May, you probably have end of the year exams and won’t have had lots of time to study. For 12th graders, almost all the university deadlines will have passed so the scores will be useless unless you are applying to universities in the UAE (they have later deadlines than US and Canada universities).

2. There is no late registration for the SAT in Dubai.

A change was made to late registration a few years ago. There is no late registration for students taking the SAT outside of the US.

Check out the registration deadlines for the 2020-2021 SAT.

Many students come to us with tales of a friend who graduated a couple of years ago getting on the waiting list and taking the SAT at the last minute.

That was years ago! The policy has changed since then.

You can’t walk up on the day with your registration booklet and take the SAT. It’s no longer allowed outside of the US.

3. There are 4 required sections on the SAT.

There used to be 10 sections on the SAT. Any information you see with that many sections is old and irrelevant.

Since the SAT was changed, there are 4 sections:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Math (no calculator)
  • Math (with calculator)

The reading and writing scores get combined for a composite score of 200 to 800.

The 2 math sections get combined for a composite score if 200 to 800.

Therefore, your total possible score on the SAT will be from 400 to 1600.

So what’s a good score?

In short, anything about 1,200 total is good. Above 1,300 total is great.

4. There’s NO essay.

There used to be an optional 5th section on the SAT…the essay.

However, in 2021, the makers of the SAT–the College Board–got rid of the essay as part of the test.

Thank goodness!

5. SAT preparation should take about 2 months.

Unfortunately, we meet students all the time who think the SAT is the kind of test you bunk, muck up, memorize, or cram for.

It’s not.

The SAT is specifically designed to test your long-range comprehension and math fluency skills. You need at least 6 weeks, preferably 2 months or more, to prepare for the SAT properly.

More and more universities are getting very specific about the SAT section and total scores they want as a minimum, so it’s very important that you give yourself adequate time to learn and understand how to apply the concepts.
